Sebastian Isepp (Nötsch im Gailtal 1884 - London 1954)

Sebastian Isepp studied from 1903 to 1907 under C. Griepenkerl and R. Bacher at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. The following years he lived and worked in Nötsch (Carinthia) and Vienna; in 1909 and 1910 he was a member of the Vienna Secession and of the Kunstverein für Kärnten. Around 1910 he went on a cruise around Africa to recover from a pulmonary disease. Together with O. Kokoschka and E. Schiele he participated in an exhibition shown in the rooms of the Hagenbund in Vienna. The same year he stayed in Paris and in 1912 he went to Berlin. In 1918 he was seriously injured at the Battle of Isonzo. He supposedly stopped painting after this traumatizing event. Before starting to work as a restorer at the Vienna Museum of Art History in 1925 he tried his hand at carving.

Sebastian Isepp went to Italy in 1920, 1924 and 1929. In 1938 he emigrated to London where he stayed until his death. He continued working as a restorer at the National Gallery, at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and at the Royal Collection. 

Sebastian Isepp mainly painted landscapes, in particular snow-covered winter landscapes.
