Maximilian Florian (Klagenfurt 1901 - Klosterneuburg near Vienna 1982)
Maximilian Florian at first attended drawing classes under Albert Zahlbruckner in Klagenfurt and later was an apprentice in a grocery store. From 1916 on he was an apprentice at a goldsmith's until the painter Ernst Riederer acknowledged his talent. Between 1922 and 1930 Maximilian Florian was allocated a grant at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts where he studied under K. Sterrer and R. Bacher. From 1938 to 1945 his art was condemned degenerate by the Nazis.
A member of the Vienna Secession (1945-1960), Maximilian Florian, among others, founded the artists' association the "Kreis" in 1946. R. Teschner aroused his interest in the puppet theatre and consequently the artist designed puppets and stage settings. In 1935 Maximilian Florian received the State Prize for Graphic Design and in 1967 the Gold Medal of Jerusalem. In the same year he exhibited together with his daughter Henriette at the Gallery Slama in Klagenfurt. He also participated in the first arts exhibition after World War II at the Gallery Würthle in Vienna and between 1946 and 1956 in numerous exhibitions in Europe and the USA.
Maximilian Florian painted landscapes, still lives, figure compositions and portraits. He was interested in the art of Herbert Boeckl whose "expressive realism" had a strong influence on the artist. His works are on display at the Österreichische Galerie and the Albertina in Vienna, the provincial museums of Carinthia and Lower Austria and of the Joanneum in Graz.
