Francois Eberl (Prag 1887 - 1963 Paris)

Francois Maurice Eberl was born in Prague in 1887, his Czech name being Frantisek Zdenek Eberl. He attended the Academy of Arts in Prague for two years and then travelled within Europe. In 1911 he settled in Paris in the district of Montmartre and exhibited at the Parisian Salons. His pictures were shown at numerous exhibitions. In 1914 he voluntarily joined in the Foreign Legion. In 1973 and 1987 the Museum of Montmartre organized two exhibitions dedicated to the artist.

Eberl never compromised his subjects but rather he expressed their full humanity in his paintings. This distinguishes him among the painters of his time. Eberl’s Monmartre paintings are the embodiment of a social environment in a given time – the evocation of Bohemian Paris, a mythical place in time when even the streets had a certain grandeur and romantic spirit.
