Anton Kolig (Lobenstein 1852 - Spitz on the Danube 1925)
Anton Kolig studied from 1904 to 1907 at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts together with Oskar Kokoschka. In 1907 he continued his studies at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts where he met Sebastian Isepp and Franz Wiegele, whose sister Katharina he would marry in 1911 and travel to Fracnce with a year later. In 1913 he went to Colmar and Boulogne-sur-Mer as well as the Netherlands. Finally Anton Kolig settled in Cassis near Marseille but in 1914 he and his family fled from Southern France and returned to Nötsch in Austria. He had to leave most of his paintings in France. In 1916 Anton Kolig did his military service: he worked as a war painter in Vienna. In 1918 he returned to Nötsch but was offered a chair at the Academy in Stuttgart in the late twenties. He moved to Stuttgart with his family, which had increased to six members but finally settled in Nötsch after having lost his chair in Stuttgart in 1943. Anton Kolig and his wife were severely wounded in a bombing of Nötsch in 1944.
Anton Kolig received several awards and prizes, among them the Golden Medal at the "German Arts" in 1928 and the Austrian State Prize in 1936. In 1929 the Carinthian government commissioned him to paint those frescoes in the Landhaus in Klagenfurt which - along with his mosaic in the in the Salzburg Festspielhaus - were to be removed after the "Anschluss" in 1938.
